Turbocharged Mazda3 reveals its performance

The Mazda3 has been around for a bit now, even winning the 2020 World Car Design Award, but it’s back and turbocharged. From a YouTube video released by Mazda México, we have Mazda has confirmed that this hot hatch will receive a turbocharged petrol engine. While it was a lot of fun figuring out automatically translated subtitles, here are the most important details that you need to know.

This Mazda3 is not going to look any different. Turbocharged Mazda3 reveal

Apart from extra black gloss details and bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, the design on the Mazda3 stays true for the turbocharged version. This is a good thing because the actual design of the car is really great.

Climbing inside the cabin and the design continues to impress. Again, no different from the original with fantastic material and sporty feel. This turbocharged Mazda3 also gets full leather trim and the exact same infotainment system which is probably the only real fault with the design. It’s small, we won’t judge on size, and tucked away behind the dashboard. It can only fully be explained through a picture which we will put below.

We won’t keep you waiting any longer. Here is what a turbocharged Mazda3 means.

Mazda has packed this car with a turbocharged 2.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that drives all four wheels. It reaches 169 kW and 420 Nm which makes for one of the highest torque outputs in this range. It’s controlled by a 6-speed automatic gearbox which can be switched to a manual for when you want a more hands-on experience.

This won’t make it the most powerful hot hatch, that title goes to the Honda Civic Type R which gives 228 kW. Still, this Mazda3 is nothing to look at since it’s gone up by 48 kW and a whole 207 Nm.

While there is no confirmation about the turbocharged Mazda3 anywhere outside of North America, it would be a lovely addition to the local line-up in South Africa. Only time can tell.
