Land Rover Discovery Metropolitan Edition revealed for SA

Land Rover is bringing a Discovery Metropolitan Edition right to South Africa. This will become the range-topping model for the seven-seater Discovery luxury family and we can expect to see it in the first half of 2022. Yes, just under two years away, like a Marvel movie.

The wait aside, Land Rover is bringing a couple of new styling and luxury features to the model to set it apart. Is it worth the wait? Let’s find out.

Updates that make this Land Rover Discovery a Metropolitan Edition.

Changing up the front end are Bright Atlas details on the grille and Hakuba Silver details that brighten up the bumper. To the sides, new Gloss Grey 22-inch Diamond Turned alloy wheels sit over black brake callipers. Making the Land Rover Discovery Metropolitan Edition darker are privacy glass windows. A panoramic roof is standard and the R-Dynamic model now gets a gloss black roof.

There are a number of additions to the interior:

  • Four-zone climate control.
  • Dead-up display.
  • Heated steering wheel.
  • Titanium mesh trim.
  • Wireless smartphone charger.

Additionally, Land Rover has given the Discovery Metropolitan Edition a cooler to keep your drinks at the perfect sipping temperature and its Cabin Air Purification system with a PM2.5 air filter.

It’s the same engines with an added towing assist.

As for what is powering this new model, nothing changes. It’s the same 6-cylinder, 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology that produces 265 kW and 500 Nm. The same D300 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine is also available with 221 kW and 650 Nm. This range-topping model does get Advanced Tow Assist to help its 3 500 kg of towing capacity.

So, is it worth the wait? The exterior updates aren’t game-changing and will be more of a flex to those who are in the know. The performance doesn’t change, so the only real additions are the seven interior updates. It will be good to weigh those features up against the increase in price to know if it’s really worth it to you.

Speaking of price, one and a half years is very early to get any useful information. We will have to take another look at the Land Rover Discovery Metropolitan Edition in 2022.
