2022 Opel Astra reveal

Opel has revealed its sixth generation of the Astra and it looks like a completely new car. Sporting new looks and platform, this hatchback even throws in some retro looks into the new design language.

“The new Astra represents the exciting next step of our new design execution. With its bold Vizor front face, strong muscular wheel arch blisters and sheer surfacing, the new Astra has a very sporty and confident personality. The interior also takes a bold step into the future. The strong driver-orientated cockpit with seamless glass look of the new Pure Panel will bring a whole new emotional experience to our customers.” – Mark Adams, Vice President Design

The new Visor for the new Opel Astra.

The big change to the new Astra’s looks is the “Visor” front fascia. A feature we have seen before on the Mokka. In is are Matrix LED headlamps. The roof has been finished in contrasting black and the wheels are alloy and up to eighteen-inch in size.

Opel brings back the 80s from the Kadett model in the C-pillar of the Astra. If you look very closely, you will notice black triangles running up it.

A digital interior.

While Opel has not specified all the features for the upcoming Astra, we do know that there will be more space and a digital focus. The extra space is thanks to the EMP2 platform that should make more legroom and offers a 422-litre boot.

The “Pure Panel” dashboard design has two 10-inch digital screens that flow into each other around the driver. This is for both the instrument cluster and the infotainment system that comes with both Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto. More features include a shift-by-wire transmission selector, electric parking brake and a wireless charging pad. Optionally, owners can get a driver’s head-up display.

Five engine options. Two are hybrids.

There are two non-electrified engines available, both come with the option of a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. The first is a 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbopetrol engine that either provides 81 kW or 96 kW. The next is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with 96 kW.

Thanks to the new platform, there will also be two plugin-hybrid options. Both have a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbopetrol engine that works with an 81 kW electric motor and 12.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. Via an eight-speed automatic transmission, it either comes with 132 kW or 165 kW. Opel also claims that the Astra can drive on electric power alone for 50 km.
