Toyota bZ4X concept previews upcoming EVs

This Toyota bZ4X concept is a peek into the EVs that the company plans to be revealed. The bZ4X is what the very first of the sub-brands models will be based on for the car that will be revealed in mid-2022.

This sub-brand, bZ or Beyond Zero, will eventually have seven EVs with its badge. Excitingly, this first one will have a global launch, so we may see it in South Africa.

Bold looks on the Toyota RAV4 like bZ4X concept.

While the bZ4X is just a concept, we can expect the upcoming Toyota model to not stray too far away. Based on the successful RAV4, the concept is very similar in size, but the lack of a combustion engine and extended wheelbase would create a lot more cabin space and additional storage space.

The body carries the futuristic design that bZ will continue throughout its range. This includes the very slim LED headlights, angular bodywork and two-tone finish. This is all subject to change.

The interior, much like the upcoming Tesla Model 3’s and other EVs, there is an F1-like steering wheel. It sits in front of a deep-set digital instrument cluster. Right now, the use of the space between the steering wheel and the display can only be assumed, but there is a space for some kind of device.

To the right of the driver, there is a floating centre console that leads to a large infotainment touchscreen. Finished in gloss black, it keeps loads of physical buttons and BMW-like navigation control. As for the rest of the features, we will have to wait for more information closer to launch.

Underpinned by the e-TNGA electric platform.

While the technical details are yet to be revealed, we do know that bZ will base their EVs on the e-TNGA electric platform that was made in collaboration with Subaru. This means an electric Subaru is on the way.

The platform that the bZ4X is based on has all-wheel-drive with dual-motors, but single motor options for front or wheel-wheel drive should become available. While predicted range and charge times are yet to be given, the upcoming bZ models may have a solar charging system that we assume is from solar panels on the roof.

We expect to hear more about the next Toyota model that will be based on this bZ4X concept soon.
