The 2022 Toyota GR 86 reveal
Toyota has revealed the new GR 86 that was created in collaboration with Subaru. While wearing the Gazoo Racing barge, this new model shares a lot with the new Subaru BRZ which we will see as we go on. Despite that, it does have some of its own unique features and a more aggressive look.

The Toyota GR 86 is a more aggressive BRZ.
What helps make the Toyota GR 86 stand out from the Subaru BRZ is the grille design. It’s has a more rectangular shape and is flanked by new air inlets. Apart from that, the two are very identical in the front.
Toyota has bumped up the aerodynamics, weight and torsion rigidity from the previous generation. The aerodynamics should help the steering responsiveness and stability while the lightweight aluminium roof panels and fenders will lower the centre of gravity and bring the curb weight to 1270 kg. Torsion rigidity has been improved by 50% according to Toyota.
The same interior that could be for the better.
The cabin does not differ from the Subaru BRZ either. The only differences are unique upholstery and Gazoo Racing badging. While it is the same as the BRZ, it is still an interior that that race car purists will love. Emphasis on digital screens has been taken away by keeping many physical buttons.
The GR 86 is not void of digital screens with a seven-inch digital driver’s display and eight-inch infotainment. When bought with an automatic transmission, Toyota will include Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology in the GR 86.
Over one second faster than the previous generation.
While this model shares the same wheelbase as the BRZ, Toyota does say there will be a unique driving experience. Even so, the GR86 gets its power from the same naturally aspirated 2,4-litre flat-four engine that gets to 173 kW and 250 Nm. It puts that power through the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or an optional automatic transmission.
This is a big improvement over the previous generation in the sprint to 100 km/h. This Toyota shaves off a whole 1.1 seconds of the time to get a quick 6.3 seconds.
Toyota South Africa has not made any comments in regards to the new GR 85 arriving in South Africa. So, it’s safe to assume that it will not make its ways to our local shores yet.
