The new Porsche 911 GT3
The 992-generation Porsche 911 GT3 has been revealed for 2022 with improvements on its predecessor. This is the seventh edition of the GT3 which was developed with Porsche Motorsport. Even with changes, it stays true to the 911 GT3 it is.
Porsche increases the downforce on the 911 GT3 without compromising aerodynamics.
While the Porsche 911 GT3 is wider and has larger wheels, the most notable feature is the massive rear wing to generate downforce. Even though the 992-generation GT3 is larger, Porsche says that the weight is still on par with its predecessor. With a manual gearbox, the weight comes to 1 418 kg. The PDK version weighs in at 1 435 kg.
This is largely thanks to the lightweight materials used like the carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic bonnet, lightweight glass windows and light-alloy wheels. A lightweight sports exhaust system has also been included that complies with the latest emissions standard.
Despite the increase in downforce, Porsche also says that the 911 GT3 doesn’t get any negative impact on the aerodynamics. When in Performance mode, the manually-set wing and diffuser increase the aerodynamic pressure for high cornering speeds.
Inside the car, there is a track screen that reduces the digital displays to the left and right of the rev counter that sits at the centre. These displays include all the important data for the track that include tyre pressure indicator, oil pressure, oil temperature, fuel tank level and water temperature.
Engine, transmission and the Nürburgring track time.
The motor that drives the rear wheels of the Porsche 911 GT3 is based on the same drivetrain on the GT3 R, the endurance racecar. This is a 4.0-litre flat-six engine that boasts 375 kW and 470 Nm. It’s mated to the buyer’s choice of a PDK dual-clutch transmission or a 6-speed manual gearbox.
With the PDK, the GT3 can sprint to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and a further 200 km/h in a mere 10.8 seconds. It reaches a top speed of 318 km/h.
The manual option will get from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, 200 km/h in 11,9 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h.
Porsche did take the new 911 GT3 to the Nürburgring Nordschleife track where it completed the lap 17 seconds faster than the previous generation, driven by Lars Kern. That time was 6:59.927 minutes over the 20.8-kilometre lap.
