2020 GWM P Series bakkie arrives in SA

The new 2020 GWM P Series bakkie has arrived in South Africa with a bang. The brand who is responsible for 50% of every pickup in China is using the word “more” to describe what they are offering. More of what? They claim almost everything.

We will go over some of what GWM means by more and all the other specs as well as prices for the new P Series in South Africa.

Two versions, sixteen variants and descriptive design.

GWM is bringing the P Series in two versions to South Africa. These are Commercial and Passenger. Within those two versions are sixteen different variants, but to simplify the noise, here is what you need to know:

  • The Passenger only comes as a double cab.
  • The Commercial comes as either a double or a single cab.
  • The Passenger comes with manual or automatic transmission.
  • The Commercial only comes with a manual transmission.

There is a rather generous six colours that buyers can choose from, but that’s not where things get ‘descriptive’. GWM describes the P Series headlights as “resembling that of panther eyes, ready to pounce.” While the taillights are “matching this elegance.” Lately, there is the grille which is “matching the belt of a championship fighter.”

We love the way they have all been described, but we like the look of the 2020 P Series even more. It’s clean, smooth and simple in the way you want it.

While we have not been inside the new P Series to tell you where the plastic is hiding, GMW does seem to offer nice materials. This includes a soft-touch instrument board, leather seats, leather door panels and steel trim inserts.

To top the seats off, they are electrically adjustable. Following the tech branch, the bakkie gets a seven-inch LCD instrument cluster and a nine-inch infotainment screen. This is all compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Additionally, the range comes with wireless charging and an intelligent driving assist system. This includes Full-speed Auto Cruise Control, self-adaptive cruise control with smart cruise control support, Automatic Emergency Brake, Lane-keeping assistance and traffic sign recognition.

One engine to drive them all in South Africa.

Locally, we will be offered the same 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine across the range. This produces 120 kW and 400 Nm. Depending on what the buyer decides to go for, the engine can either be mated to an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.

GWM has given the P Series some off-road capability as well. A buyer can get every level-range in a 4×4 version. For those who want the numbers, here they are:

  • Ground clearance is 232 mm.
  • Entry angle is 27 degrees.
  • Exit angle is 25 degrees.

There are several more safety features to discuss as well. For starters, Vehicle stability, traction control and hill hold assist is standard across the range. Airbags are too starting at two and going all the way to seven as you move your way up the range. Lastly, park distance control is standard on all models but higher-level bakkies will get a reverse camera to a full 360 view camera.
