2021 Nissan Navara gets a facelift and new Pro-4X trim

We were very excited to get an early look at the newly revised Nisan Navara double-cab and its new flagship model, the Pro-4X. It is likely the most advanced Navara yet with Nissan saying that it has an “enhanced level of safety, comfort and driving pleasure.”

One thing to note about the reveal is that it is for the Australian market and thus contains the specifications for Australia. The new Nissan Navara and the Pro-4X model will be available in South Africa, but may not feature every aspect mentioned in this reveal. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait very long as the production of the SA bound Navaras will begin in 2021.

New Nissan Navara design and Pro-4X upgrades.

Like the Titan pick-up in America, the new Navara will feature the brand’s bulky interlock grille. It’s flanked by new LED headlamps that incorporate four main beams and daytime running lights. At the back, revised taillights sit above a new rear bumper that has an integrated step. Around the side, the Navara gets new side steps and running boards too.

What we see in the images is the Nissan Navara Pro-4X, complete with all the Australian details. This includes many blacked-out elements like the grille and emblem. The 17-inch alloy wheels are finished in black as well while Magma red stands out against all these additional black elements.

Improved interior to better than ever.

The facelift brings a more comfort-focused interior than the previous generations. For starters, the ride should be a lot quieter from inside the car with upgraded insulation while some comfort of life features make things smoother for the driver.

  • Redesigned multifunction steering wheel
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Speed-sensing door locks
  • Auto-folding mirrors

The instrument cluster has been updated with a 7-inch digital driver’s display while the centre of the dashboard features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system includes:

  • Satellite navigation
  • Bluetooth streaming audio
  • Voice recognition
  • Smartphone screen-mirroring

The passengers have been considered too with this facelift with upgraded rear-seat cushions and shapes. A centre fold-out armrest can divide the back and includes cup holders.

Higher load capacity and loads of driving features for a smooth ride.

With no mention of the engine, we assume that the same 2.3-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine will be carried over. This doesn’t mean that Nissan hasn’t upgraded the Navara’s performance though.

Now when in four-wheel-drive mode, the Navara will activate its Active Brake Limited Slip Differential system (ABLS). This will manage power delivery and wheel braking between the front and rear axles and between the left and right of the vehicle, depending on traction and speed. It works with the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and ABS to assist large payloads and low-grip terrain.

Speaking about the payload, Nissan says the Navara has an improved capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes, depending on the model. There is also a higher 3500 kg braked towing capability thanks to a new Trailer Sway Control system.

Nissan has also tweaked the suspension tuning and added a strengthened rear axle and a bigger load bed. Even more Nissan Intelligent Mobility tech feature in this Navara and we hope that the brand will include most of them in the South African versions.

  • Intelligent Forward Collision Warning
  • Emergency Braking
  • Driver Alertness
  • Lane Intervention
  • Around View Monitor
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

As for the Navara, Pro-4X, Nissan calls it a style package so will likely feature all that the model just underneath it will. Hopefully, South African specific details will be revealed soon as we wait for this generation of Navara to go into production.
