Hyundai launches their EV Ioniq brand

Hyundai has just launched its new Electric Vehicle (EV) sub-brand, Ioniq. The name takes the word ion, for the battery, and unique and mashes them together. Ioniq is how Hyundai plans to become one of the biggest EV producers with goals of selling 1 million units by 2025.

“The IONIQ brand will change the paradigm of EV customer experience. With a new emphasis on connected living, we will offer electrified experiences integral to an eco-friendly lifestyle.” – Wonhong Cho, executive vice president and global chief marketing officer at Hyundai Motor Company.

Hyundai has three new EVs planned for Ioniq.Hyundai Ioniq EV

Over the next 4 years, Hyundai plans to launch three new EV models under the Ioniq name. Each model is named with a number. Even numbers for sedans and odd numbers for SUVs and crossovers. We have been given a preview of their 5, 6 and 7 models in a very Tron-like style.

The Ioniq 5 will be the very first EV produced by Hyundai’s new brand. Based off of Hyundai’s 45 Concept, it is the vehicle we see on the far right of the image. We can expect to see this mid-sized crossover in 2021.

Following that is the Ioniq 6, the sedan on the left. This particular model will be based on the Prophesy Concept car and is planned for 2022.

The final Ioniq in Hyundai’s immediate plans is the 7. An SUV planned for 2024 of which we can only see a silhouette and light signature in the back.

Built on a new platform.

Hyundai has developed a new platform that they have named Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This will be the platform that all Ioniq models are built on. It is designed for fast charging and decent range. The interior design will follow the ‘smart living space’ concept Hyundai has created. This will include highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity and several other unique features.

Hyundai’s advertising campaign for the Ioniq has also been rather impressive. Turning the London Eye into a Q. Needless to say, we look forward to seeing more of Ioniq. We will also hopefully get more information on the 5 soon since it’s launch is only next year.
