An Opel Mokka will be the next EV SUV

Opel has recently released teaser videos about their new car, Mokka. It’s going to be a new SUV with an all-electric version, something all European brands have been doing. Let’s discuss what we know and think about this new car.

All we have seen so far is a prototype in an almost camouflage like vinyl. It’s the second generation of Mokka, having dropped the X from the last model’s name and taken what seems to be an entirely new design. It’s 120 kg lighter and more rigid thanks to more high-strength steels says, Opel. It also could because Opel has been bought by the Peugeot Citroen Group (PSA) and is using their platform.

The new design of the Opel Mokka looks more rigid. Opel Mokka front

With its squarer body, grille and lights, the rigidity Opel wants to show us stands out. Unlike a lot of SUVs, this Mokka does not have a very big grille, its actually quite small, even for a less flashy SUV. Looking at the daytime running LEDs, it looks like Peugeot are putting a little more of themselves in than they are letting Opel show. Those tiger fangs are not mistakable, but that could just be for this prototype. Everything we see now could change.

There doesn’t appear to be a strong steeping roof which is promising for back seat space and potential boot space too. It also looks like there will be no fake exhausts on this car if you don’t go for an electric version which is very honest of you Peug… I mean Opel.

We can expect similar capabilities from the Mokka that we see in more modern Peugeots and Citroens. Opel has said they want a focus on making the Mokka’s drive feel engaging. There was also mention of an all-electric version which I am quite excited about, but it will probably not see itself arriving in South Africa very soon.

“The new Mokka will change people’s perception of our brand. Not only does it show that we’re serious about electrification, but also that we’re not afraid to innovate with design, both inside and out of the car. The Mokka is still in its development phase now, but it is set to be one of Vauxhall’s most important models when it arrives with customers at the start of next year.” – Stephen Norman, Vauxhall’s Managing Director.

We could be seeing the Mokka next year in 2021.

Set to start production at the end of 2020 and start showing itself in 2021, we won’t have to wait too long to see it out of the green vinyl and on the roads. We look forward to that and talking about it when we learn more about the car.
