Next-gen Ford Mustang will be electric

The legendary Ford Mustang has recently celebrated its 56th birthday and it does so while maintaining the title of the world’s best-selling sports coupé. It has had that crown for 5 years now with 633 000 sales in 146 countries worldwide. Even in South Africa Ford has sold 2 943 Mustangs as of March 2020.

“We’re proud of our growing Mustang stable and performance variants. From Sweden to Shanghai, more and more driving enthusiasts are enjoying the feeling of freedom and the open road in these new Mustangs. We are honoured to serve our owners, enthusiasts and fans for 56 years and counting.” – Jim Farley, chief operating officer of the Ford Motor Company.

The next Mustang we will see is an EV SUV.

It’s not a true Mustang and we should not expect it to be one. It’s an SUV inspired by the Ford Mustang called the Mustang Mach-E. Set to launch later in 2020, it could be a very big rival to the Tesla Model Y. It comes with a lot of cool technology and some that are just interesting like a pin code to open your door if you have both lost your key and your phone is dead (because you can open it with those two as well).

Climbing into the cabin, you are met with a massive 16-inch tablet-style infotainment system to control all the fancy features the Mach-E will have. On the topic of technology, we can expect a lot of self-driving assists to feature although Ford has not said if that comes as standard.

I think it would be unfair to judge the Mustang Mach-E based on its name. It is basically its own car after all.

The next Ford Mustang coupé is going to be a hybrid.

With the ever-increasing requirements for car manufacturers to go green, the powerful Mustang driven by a V8 petrol engine does not exactly fit into that future. In fact, with Ford’s shift in focus to SUVs and trucks, the future of the Mustang for a brief moment didn’t look very promising. Luckily, Ford has no intention of letting its iconic Mustang die.

There are some changes though and it is fair for the superfans to not be happy about that. For starters, it is an all-wheel=drive hybrid. Electric power in the front and petrol power in the back. A huge change to the previously rear-wheel-drive only design.

What will stay the same is the V8 and we don’t expect Ford to stray very far with the design and there is likely going to be a convertible. This is all speculation of course.

Do you think Ford can keep the Mustang true to itself?

It all comes down to personal opinion at this point because we just don’t know enough about what the year 2022 will bring for obvious reasons. Personally, I’m excited to see a Mustang inspires EV SUV packed filled with technology and I have high hopes for what Ford will do with the Mustang coupé.
