Toyota C-HR gets updated
We got to see the Toyota C-HR on our roads last year and the small SUV has turned many heads. Now in 2020, Toyota has upgraded the C-HR and gave it a bit more style. Although, the biggest changes are not the looks, but rather the technology that is now a standard in all models.
About the C-HR’s looks
It was cool and still is, with only minor changes it’s really the same thing. Some new features include scrolling indicators, new alloy wheels and the front bumper is lower than before so, it looks a little more aggressive than last year.
And on the road
All models of this C-HR are only petrol-electric hybrids with front-wheel drive. While this adds to the fuel economy, it’s still not the most fuel-conscious SUV. The hybridisation does mean it also comes with regenerative braking. What that does is it converts the power when you slow down to recharge the electric motor. This makes the breaks act a bit different from what we may be used to.
There are two engines. The first is a 1.8 litre that gives 122 horsepower and the other a full 2 litre that can get up to 184 horsepower. Both options come with the choice of manual or automatic transmission.
Then the inside
Here is where most of the changes were made. There are better materials and nice upgraded seats. Toyota has also put a lot of effort into the sound dampening that makes the overall driving experience smoother.
The infotainment system is now a standard in all models which is very considerate of Toyota. It’s not the best out there, however, it does have both Android Auto and Google CarPlay which more than makeup for that.
There are some negatives when it comes to the back seats. It has very little space and no USB ports. Because of the sloping roof of the car, the windows are tiny, which makes it even more cramped.
Looking at the boot, it has 377 litres of space which is only slightly less to some of its competition. When you need even more space than that, the front seats fold over completely flat.
The models
There are 5 models of the C-HR, each with increased features, but what is great about the car is that the most important features all come in the basic model. So, if you want to save some money on an SUV, you can do that and not feel left out. The base model also comes with dual-zone climate control and a reversing camera.
If you are willing to pay more for the car, you can get parking senses and even get the car can park for you. There are a few style upgrades including more LEDs and two-tone paint jobs. And if you really want to get fancy, you can get leather seats and a heated steering wheel.
Is the C-HR for you
We did recently talk about the new Corolla and if a Toyota family car is what you want, that car has more passenger space and handles a lot better on the road.
If a good-looking small SUV is what you want, then it is an option to consider. Where it lacks in some departments like space, it makes up for it in looks and overall quality.
You can expect to pay from R371,700 for the base 1,2T model and up to R476,600 for the most expensive Luxury CVT.
