High speed action in East London as South African Single-Seaters
East London hosts the high-speed South African Single-Seaters (SASS) at the Extreme Festival on Saturday, July 11. The event is round four of the national Duratec Formula Ford Championship and will be their fastest race day to date.
The long, high-speed straight layout at East London means the single-seaters achieve the maximum possible speed as they negotiate the fourth round of their national championship.
Two races await at this coastal round and it is Robert Wolk (41 – Chemical Logistics Mygale) who leads the championship fight. Wolk has a massive 23 point advantage over his rivals, thanks to achieving four race wins out of the six races that have taken place, four held at Zwartkops Raceway and two at Killarney.
While Wolk has a clear and dominant lead on the championship, there is plenty of action taking place in the series. Second place in the SASS championship is shared by Julian van der Watt (42 – Investchem Mygale SJ08) and Dewald Brummer (11 – MAD Racing Mygale SJ09). The pair have achieved identical points during the first three rounds and now find themselves in a duel for the second spot on the podium.
While the pair will be fighting for points between themselves, they will also have to keep an eye on Keagan Masters (44 – Performance Masters Mygale SJ08). Masters holds fourth in the series, had a great outing at Zwartkops claiming second overall for the day and is just six points behind Van der Watt and Brummer.
If either gets distracted, Masters could pounce, turning the tables on both of his rivals.
Masters is, however, not safe from also being challenged. There are no less than three racers who have the potential to put serious pressure on Masters in East London. Matthew Merton (5 – Mygale), Werner Scholtz (3 – Investchem / Motorvia Mygale SJ08) and Dean Venter (77 – Manitou Group / Turnfab Engineering) are respectively one, two and five points behind Masters.
All three way battle for points and track position is certain as they aim to achieve their best results of 2015 – at one of the most demanding circuits for the season. Total commitment will be required in order to stay ahead on a circuit which encourages high-speed racing.
At the season mid-point the SASS field has a number of battles raging and, as the opportunities for collecting points become more limited, the drivers will be racing with greater intensity – a recipe for exciting competition to keep motorsport fans entertained.
