Kia Top40SA with iTunes

(Johannesburg), 5 September 2014. The Kia Top40SA chart show, a brand new innovative radio chart show format, is set to launch on 947 and KFM tomorrow, Saturday 6 September. The weekly chart positions are based solely on the live Top 40 songs chart on the South Africa iTunes Store. In a first for South Africa, listeners will decide the chart position of their favourite songs and artists by downloading them from iTunes both before and during the live show.

This all-new Charts Show concept will be hosted live from Cape Town by Rob Vember between 10:00 and 14:00 every Saturday. “Listeners are going to keep me on my toes, as they can influence the chart while we’re on air, simply by downloading the songs they want to hear on iTunes,” says show host Rob Vember.

“It’s a very transparent and credible chart that gives the power to the listeners rather than the radio programmer. Artists that make the #1 slot on the chart will know that it is genuinely because of the commercial success of their song in the minds of the listeners,” says 947 Programming Manager, Ravi Naidoo.

“In addition to creating an innovative and dynamic interactive new radio format, we will also be promoting legal download of music by artists we support, including the many local artists that are currently topping the iTunes charts in South Africa. We are passionate supporters of South African music and hope this will have a positive effect on the local music industry,” Naidoo concludes.
According to Sean Watson, Managing Director of Sony Music Entertainment Africa, iTunes has made a huge mark on the South African music industry since it’s arrival in late 2012. “Bringing such an exciting new radio format to South Africa will only provide more visibility and excitement around legal music downloads and is great for artists, record labels and radio listeners alike,” he says. “We hope to see Sony Music artists topping the charts on a frequent basis.”

Having launched new logos and brand positioning this week, Primedia sees the innovative new chart as one of the ways in which they are living the 947 and KFM brands.
“We are connecting with our audiences and letting them tell us what they like,” continues Naidoo. “The iTunes chart is a great barometer of popularity amongst the music listeners of South Africa, and therefore this collaboration is an ideal fit to help realize this vision. We are delighted that Kia has bought into the new vision for the show and have come on board as the lead sponsor.”
“We wanted to drive the emotion of music to reach our target market, help spread the word about how good our local music talent is, and of course surprise our listeners,” says David Sieff, Marketing Director of Kia Motors South Africa of the launch of the new initiative. “The Kia Top40SA does all of this and much, much more.”
