This could be goodbye to the BMW i3
The exciting little BMW i3 seems like it might come to an end according to a report from the UK. After its global launch in 2013, the electric car has made its way to 250 000 homes around the world. It’s even not an uncommon sight in South Africa which is way behind in the world of electrification.
We could see the end of the BMW i3 in mid-2022.
For a car designed back in 2013, the look still stands up to all the upcoming EVs. It was also very smart in being an electric car so early on, offering a pure electric version as well as a range extender that included an onboard petrol-powered generator. The kind of thing we only really saw a lot of in Dakar 2022.
From Autocar, a BMW spokesperson confirmed that the last i3 model will go into production in July 2022. So this will soon be a goodbye.
“Therefore, after a decade of setting the standard in its class and leading the way for today’s generation of electric cars, the decision has been taken to discontinue BMW i3 production from summer 2022.”
If the availability of one of these electric cars doesn’t come by you, we might be able to get potential replacements soon. An all-electric version of the BMW X1 could be in the cards. Apart from that, a second-generation electric Mini is on its way after being built with Great Wall Motors.
Was the BMW i3 a car you had on your list? If it is, it’s time to act quickly as models are being snatched up very quickly. However, it might be a good time to stay waiting for your first EV in South Africa as our country is only in the very beginning stages of seeing public chargers.
