Lucid Motors has just started production of their Air Sedan and have revealed information about DreamDrive, the company’s advanced driver-assist system. A big congratulations to Lucid for managing to enter production, something many EV startups are still working towards.
DreamDrive is not some small detail to add to the Lucid Air production though. This is how the company is going to compete with Tesla and Elon Musk’s autonomous driving systems that we have seen so much online.
“DreamDrive Pro has been designed to grow in capability, thanks to our ability to deliver software over-the-air and key equipment already in place in the vehicle. Thanks to highly integrated hardware and software teams, Lucid has the ability to develop new functionality for DreamDrive Pro in-house. This can benefit every facet of the DreamDrive Pro experience, from the frequency of updates to the planned rollout of the Highway Pilot system for conditional automated driving on select roadways in the coming years.” – Dr. Eugene Lee, Senior Director, ADAS and Autonomous Driving, Lucid Motors
Level 2 Autonomous Lucid DreamDrive.
DreamDrive is a level 2 autonomous driving system. It makes use of 32 sensor inputs that include ultrasonic and radar sensors, cameras, driver attention monitoring and solid-state Lidar. The latter one is something Tesla has turned away from and instead stuck to a camera-only system.
Lucid calls the hardware behind DreamDrive an Ethernet Ring. This allows a high-speed data network that uses four computer gateways all around the car.
Highway Pilot is another feature Lucid has added to help navigate the roads. It’s a combination of adaptive cruise control, lane centering and Traffic Jam Assist. This will allow the car to stick to its lane and move with the surrounding cars up to 64 km/h.
Auto Park is the next revealed feature to come with DreamDrive. This will allow the car to identify and enter parallel and perpendicular parking spots. It will automatically manage steering and drive inputs.
