Fuel price will go for a hike in August
The Automobile Association (AA) brings grim news as it predicts the upcoming changes to fuel price in August 2021. This prediction shows massive hikes in cost for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin along with a warning on a potential fuel shortage. While the two don’t affect each other, it’s still worrying news for South African motorists.
Predicted changes to fuel price in August 2021.
Here are the increases as predicted by the AA:
- Petrol by 87 cents.
- Diesel by 58 cents.
- Illuminating paraffin by 56 cents.
As a prediction, this can change between now and the end of the month. However, this could mean a massive R17.47 cents or R18.19 cents inland per litre for 95 unleaded petrol. We will next discuss the potential shortage in fuel, but the AA notes that a shortage will not affect the price, at least not directly. The riots have weakened the Rand and as a result, fuel will go up because of it.
The refinery.
Durban is home to one of South Africa’s biggest refineries and is also the location of the civil unrest.
“SAPREF’s (South African Petroleum Refiners) declaration of force majeure means that events beyond its control – the recent lawlessness – has forced it to shut down the refinery.” – AA
“Past disasters involving refineries have polluted wide areas and claimed hundreds of lives, so SAPREF’s caution is justified. If the shutdown were to be protracted though, it could impact considerably on fuel supply to many areas, including Gauteng and other northern provinces inland.” – AA
