After an international launch in 2020, the new Mazda BT-50 has arrived in South Africa. This is the third model produced since the company started their third generation of vehicles and it’s claimed to have been redesigned from the ground up.

The Mazda BT-50 will come in three flavours – Active, Dynamic and Individual. They each follow the brand’s latest Kodo – Soul of Motion design language, but what visually sets each model apart is yet to be revealed. Mazda has paid particular attention to the front end with updating the grille, bumpers and the new LED headlights that take inspiration from the brand’s SUVs.

The exterior isn’t the only SUV inspired aspect as the same elements feature in the cabin as well. Depending on the model, the BT-50 will come equipped with a seven or nine-inch display. This is complete with the MZD Connect Infotainment System that’s compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto. The system also connects you to the reverse camera and parking sensors.

It’s all diesel with more features.

There will be two diesel engines split between the three model variants. The Active model gets a 1.9-litre diesel engine with the choice of an automatic or manual gearbox. This is good for 121 kW and 213 Nm. Then the Dynamic and Individual share the 3.0-litre engine that produces 140 kW and 450 NM with a six-speed automatic transmission. For anyone looking for all-wheel drive, the individual is the only model that gets it.

There are a number of safety and driver assistance features that come standard including, Hill Launch Assist, Hill Descent Control, Trailer Sway Mitigation, 7 airbags and Cruise Control.

“We could not be prouder or more excited to launch the All-New BT-50 in Southern Africa now. The vehicle has a long history locally, and internationally. It has been re-imagined and re-built from the ground up, with all the utilitarian value of a double-cab bakkie, and all the comfort and technology expected of an SUV. We are confident it will be met with enthusiasm by our customers and media alike, as a true stand-out and another bold reflection on our Japanese Heritage.” – Craig Roberts, MD of Mazda Southern Africa on the introduction of the All-New BT-50
