The Ford Mustang Mach 1 is here
This limited-edition Ford Mustang Mach 1 has arrived in South Africa and we have the local specifications and pricing. This model will have limited numbers, but for those who want a more track-focused Mustang can benefit from a small increase in performance and additional aerodynamic features.
“Like the 1969 original, the Mustang Mach 1 bridges the gap between the standard Mustang GT and the high-performance Shelby models, delivering V8 power, unique functional aerodynamic enhancements, competition-capable suspension upgrades and a driver-focused cockpit.” – Doreen Mashinini, General Manager for Marketing at Ford South Africa
Track-focused aerodynamics and performance tracking apps.
What really separates the Mach 1 from the standard Ford Mustang on the outside is the aerodynamic package. This package increases downforce for high-speed stability and better cornering by adding a number of exterior parts. These include a front splitter, rear spoiler and vents to improve cooling as well. Finally, the Mach 1 gets 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres.
Inside, drivers will get to use track-focused driving modes as well as several apps to record performance data which can be accessed via the twelve-inch digital instrument cluster. Apart from that, drivers get to benefit from heated and cooled seats and a ten-speaker B&O audio system.
To make the interior feel more visually unique, Ford has given the Mustang Mach 1 Metal Grey stitching and a build number. It is a limited-edition model after all.
How did Ford make the Mach 1 faster?
Powering the Mach 1 is the same 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine, but with improved performance. The power has been bumped up to 338 kW and 529 Nm by adding a high-performance open-air induction system. This can then be mated to the clients choice of transmission – a six-speed manual gearbox from the Shelby GT350 or a Ford 10-speed automatic transmission. The standard model does not get this choice.
The automatic version does clock in a little quicker in the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h, getting there in just 4.4 seconds. The manual version is just 0.4 seconds slower.
Additional upgrades have been added to improve handling – electric power-assisted steering, electronically-controlled MagneRide 2 adjustable suspension and stiffer front springs and anti-roll bars.
