Volkswagen Tiguan gets refreshed
Volkswagen has given the very popular Tiguan a fresh new look and some additional features to the whole range. This facelift will become available in South Africa during the third quarter of 2021. We can expect pricing details to be revealed closer to the date. But for now, here are the new features Volkswagen will be bringing.
New face and updated looks on the Volkswagen Tiguan.
There is a completely updated face with a wider grille that moves into the also wider LED headlights. The lower part of the front bumper gains much stronger shapes for a more aggressive look while at the back the badging hot realigned. The Tiguan badge moved from the bottom side of the boot to be centre and under the Volkswagen logo.
There are new wheel designs with options on every trim level. On the standard Tiguan, these are 17-inch Monata alloy wheels. Additional colours are also offered to give a more earthy style to the Tiguan. These are Ginger Brown, Kings Red, Lapiz Blue, Night Shade Blue and Dolphin Grey.
There are loads of optional features that buyers can specify, these include:
- Black Style Package.
- IQ Matrix LED lights.
- Panoramic sunroof.
- Tow bar.
On the mid-spec Tiguan Life, Volkswagen has equipped larger 18-inch Frankfurt alloy wheels with 19-inch Victoria Falls alloys available as well. Cornering headlight were added to the LEDs while an electronic tailgate finishes up the exterior features.
On the range-topping Tiguan R-Line, there is the obvious R-Line package and 19-inch Valencia Wheels.
More features and an updated infotainment system.
As standard, there is a leather steering wheel that now features touch sliders for the sound system’s volume. The latest of Volkswagen’s infotainment systems, MIB3, has also been installed. It has a much better voice activation control, multiple phone pairing and wireless App-Connect. Overall, it will remain mostly the same but with some minor ease of life features.

- Discover Pro infotainment system.
- Harmon Kardon sound system.
- Heads-up display.
- IQ drive package.
- Trailer Manoeuvring System.
The Tiguan Life will additionally feature climatronic air conditioning and front park distance control. On the R-Line model, buyers will also receive Vienna leather seats, ambient lighting, active info display and Composition Media Radio with App-Connect.
Three engines and standard automated driving.
Volkswagen will be offering two petrol engines and one diesel engine at launch. That first petrol engine is a 1.4 TSI that drives the front wheels via a six-speed DSG transmission. It’s 110 kW and 250 Nm will get it to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h.
The bigger petrol engine is a 2,0 TSI with 162 kW and 350 N.m. It has all-wheel-drive and is controlled by a seven-speed DSG transmission. It will get from 0 to 100 km/h in a much quicker 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 225 km/h.
Lastly, the 2.0-litre TDI produces 130 kW and 380 Nm. It employs a seven-speed DSG transmission for all four wheels and can spring to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds while reaching a top speed of 207 km/h.
No matter which engine is equipped, the refreshed Volkswagen Tiguan will include a semi-autonomous mode that will take over steering, throttle and braking up to speeds of 200 km/h. This does require the driver to have both hands on the steering wheel to function but will make driving require a lot less effort. The cruise control can also adjust the vehicle speed as it sees fit for different speed zones on the road. It does this using the navigation system as well as a camera hidden away in the front.
