New 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander reveal

This is the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander complete with bold new styling to enter the more premium family car sector. It’s a seven-seater based on the new Nissan X-Trail’s platform, this is thanks to it being the first Mitsubishi model produced from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.

While set to launch in the US during April with the rest of the world to follow, there are currently no plans for a 2021 launch in South Africa. We can hope that will change, but for now, let’s look at what the new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander has to offer.

Bold new looks on the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander.

As with all modern Mitsubishi models, the Outlander features the “Dynamic Shielf motif” in the shape of its front end. The lighting resembles that of a boxier Nissan Juke with high-positioned DRLs and very low sitting headlights. They are the large oval lights just above the fog lamps. 20-inch alloy wheels come standard on higher-spec models while a panoramic sunroof will be standard on the flagship model.

Inside is the seven-seater configuration with a middle bench that can both slide and recline. Thanks to the slightly larger size compared to the previous generation, there is now an additional 25 mm of legroom in the front seats and 22.9 mm for the middle seats. Both those rows also receive heaters. Sorry, to the children in that back row.

The materials are premium looking and while we can’t test it out for ourselves, we do like what we see. There are diamond-quilted leather-like surfaces and textured metal inserts. Lower-spec versions of the Mitsubishi Outlander will come with a seven-inch driver’s display while range-topping models receive a much larger 12.3-inch instrument cluster.

This comes alongside a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Andriod Auto and Apple CarPlay. More tech features include a wireless charging pad, 3-zone automatic climate control and USB A and USB C ports.

Standard engine and safety features.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander shares a MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension setup and electric power steering with the X-Trail. It also shares the same naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine. This comes mated to an eight-speed CTV automatic transmission. Buyers will be able to choose from two or all-wheel drive.

Mitsubishi has added an array of standard active and passive safety features that include eleven airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, nav-linked speed-sign recognition and autonomous emergency braking.
