Volkswagen ID Buggy is no more

Did you see the Volkswagen ID Buggy concept reveal in March 2019? We were very excited to see come to production. Unfortunately, Volkswagen has just confirmed that this will not happen.

Here’s what Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of Volkswagen said to Autocar:
“No, we won’t do this car. We had a partner, but in the end, it didn’t work out.”

So what exactly happened to the Volkswagen ID Buggy?

The concept was going to run on a lithium-ion battery that produced around 150 kW from its electric motor. While initially rear-wheel-drive, the brand did talk about an all-wheel-drive version. It would have been an amazing come back from the buggies of old with no roof and a lot of attitude.

But what happened?

The EV dune buggy was not going to be purely Volkswagen. A German company, e.Go Mobile, were collaborating with Volkswagen to produce the ID Buggy. Well, e.Go Mobile is now “battling bankruptcy proceedings.”

It also seems that Volkswagen has no intention of bringing back the ID Buggy without e.Go Mobile. Farewell EV Buggy.

What else did Ralf Brandstätter reveal?

Brandstätter confirmed high-performance GTX variants of the ID4, the VW EV we are expecting to one day arrive in South Africa, as well as the ID5 in 2021. The ID Buzz is also still set to launch in 2022 with potential EV saloon and estate cars for 2023.
