Kia enters the EV scene with its Plan S

Kia has recently announced what it calls ‘Plan S’, the EV strategy with a $25-billion investment behind it. The brand aims to become a leader in the electric vehicle (EV) market starting as soon as 2021, although the plan runs all the way through to 2025. These Kia EVs that come from Plan S will also carry the new logo and design language.

“Kia has sold more than 100,000 BEVs worldwide since the introduction of our first mass-produced BEV in 2011, the Kia Ray EV. Since then, we have started to introduce a range of new BEVs for global markets and announced plans to accelerate this process in the years ahead. By refocusing our business on electrification, we are aiming for BEVs to account for 25 percent of our total worldwide sales by 2029.” – Ho Sung Song, Kia President and CEO.

From the announcement, it looks like Kia has seven new battery electric vehicles (BEV) planned for 2025 with the first one to be announced in 2021. Code-named CV, it will be an electric crossover that uses the new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The same platform that Kia will use on all its upcoming EVs. Kia says that the CV promises high-performance and recharging capabilities.

With the CV will come the new design language that Kia plans to bring with their EV lineup as well as the new logo.

Plan S also includes Kia investing into the EV infrastructure of Korea, Europe and North America. This will include an expansion of services and charging stations. This would be an expansion of Kia’s already existing chargers to support their EVs with the rollout of Plan S.

We cannot tell much about the design from the revealed silhouette in the images, but we sure are excited to see what Kia will show in 2021.
