Introducing the 190 kW Volkswagen Amarok

Topping the range with even more power, the Volkswagen Amarok is getting a 190 kW version and it is on it’s way to South Africa. Already announced in 2018, we were first expecting to see this version of the Amarok in 2019, however, Volkswagen released official dates for 2020. Now we can expect to see this bakkie in October 2020.

Where are the 190 kW coming from in this Volkswagen Amarok?Volkswagen Amarok dirt

The 190 kW Volkswagen Amarok will come in two flavours, Highline and the new range-topping Extreme. Both versions will have the same 3.0-litre V6 TDI that will drive 190 kW and 580 Nm. It reaches these numbers with the assistance of an overboost function that can take power up to 200 kW for up to 20 seconds while pushing the torque number to the 580 Nm we see now.

As expected, it will come equipped with 4Motion all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, just like the previous local flagship model. With everything put together, Volkswagen says this 190 kW Amarok will spring to 100 km/h in just 7.3 seconds.

For buyers who want even more equipment on this Amarok, there will be several available. This includes heavy-duty leaf springs, Milford 19-inch alloy wheels and a sports bar in body colour. The Extreme should come standard with a few more extras like heated seats, rain-sensing wipers and 20-inch wheels.

Local prices put it well above the previous flagship.Volkswagen Amarok photo

There is an almost R200,000 price gap between the previous flagship and the new 190 kW versions. This will start the Amarok 3,0 TDI 190 kW 4Motion Auto Highline at R908,300 while the range-topping Amarok 3,0 TDI 190 kW 4Motion Auto Extreme will start at R974,600.

Coming in 2022, we can expect the second-generation of the Volkswagen Amarok which will be built alongside the latest Ford Rangers. We have only seen a teaser sketch so far, but it does seem like it will carry a lot of presence for Volkswagen in the future.
