The new Opel Mokka revealed

The new Opel Mokka revealed

After being teased these past months, Opel has finally revealed the full new Mokka. This marks the second-generation for this car but it’s not like any Opel we have seen before. This Mokka has Opel’s new face and from the battery-powered drivetrain to design, it’s all-new.

The new Opel Mokka has a strong new design.

Before we go into any details, for a completely new design, this Mokka looks great. It sets a completely new direction for Opel which we are excited to see them follow. To the finer details, even though this is a fully electric car, there is a “grille”. Even for an electric car, it looks simple enough to not notice. What you do notice is the black panel that connects the LED headlights and gives this car a strong, futuristic look. Those headlights are fitted with Matrix ant-dazzling functionality which is incredibly helpful for everyone driving around you.

The bodywork is all nicely framed by a two-tone colour scheme and chrome detailing that frames the car. We are especially big fans of the two-tone paint affecting the bonnet. It gives a rather stern and serious expression.

Opel’s new digital interior concept.

While the whole of the interior is brand new as well, the biggest talking point is Opel’s new digital interior concept. This put’s all the controls into one sweeping display made of 10 and 12-inch screens. It leaves the interior incredibly neat while keeping physical dials for your HVAC and sound system. While we have not had the chance to sit in one and judge the overall quality, the use of materials looks nice. We especially appreciate the textured look of the dashboard.

Even though this Opel Mokka is more compact than its previous version, there is about just as much space. The cabin and passenger seats should be mostly unchanged. The boot is only marginally smaller, boasting 350-litres of space.

This Opel Mokka should be lots of fun to drive.

Under the floor of this Opel Mokka lies 50 kWh lithium-ion batteries. These give the car a total of 100 kW and 260 Nm of torque, keep in mind that electric cars put that power on immediately. Opel says there will be a top speed of 150 km/h while the most important figure, range, is 322 km. This all makes it sound like an incredibly fun car to drive around town and even make commutes a little less dull.

Opel has fitted this Mokka with an advanced Cruise Control system with stop and go functions for heavy traffic as well as an Active Lane Positioning system. Both of which will make staying in the lane while keeping comfortable so much better.

We won’t see it in South Africa any time soon.

While Opel does say South Africa is in their sights for the Mokka, there are no guarantees. They say soonest will be the first quarter of 2022, but by then it’s possible Opel’s EV plans for South Africa may change. A petrol engine version is said to come soon, but this did not affect the date of 2022 for SA.
