BMW 4-Series 2020 is officially revealed

BMW has set out on a quest to differentiate the 2020 4-Series coupé from its sibling, the 3-Series sedan. With a redesigned exterior, updates to the interior and improved performance, the BMW 4-Series Coupé we will see in 2020 will no longer be a 2-door 3-Series. If that massive grille doesn’t convince you already, then let’s talk about what else is new. 

The talking point of the BMW 4-Series 2020.

The outside design is dominated by the massive grille that has been a hot topic since the leaks. While it is not everyone’s cup of tea and even BMW call is daring, bigger grilles have been in demand on and BMW has answered it. The rest of the design is gorgeous. Rigid and bold lines in the headlights, taillights and bumpers are complemented by the smooth bodywork. This new 4-Series is also slightly longer, wider and lower than the BMW 3-Series making it just that much sportier. 

What we do know about the interior.

I have not been able to climb into one of these 4-Series myself but, we do know a bit about the interior. BMW has borrowed bits of the 3-Series so, we can assume the same quality and similar features will appear. Like the 10-inch infotainment screen and the 12-inch driver’s display. From what we can see in the reveal, there is plenty of storage in the cabin and a good mix of materials. 

The sports seats are brand new. Another feature that sets this car apart from its sibling is a larger boot. BMW says it boasts 440 litres. 

There are 5 range options and some with hybrid tech.

There are 5 difference range types that will be available at launch, however, BMW says they will be offering more engines in March 2021. Before we talk about each model and what engine it has, let’s cover two simple standard features. The ride of the car should give you a feeling of more control with a sportier suspension setup and every range option comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Now, let’s go under the hood and talk engines. 

The entry-level units are the 420i and 420d that use petrol and diesel respectively. The 420I has a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 135 kW and 300 Nm of torque. Looking at the diesel option, the 420d has a 4-cylinder turbodiesel that combines with the 48 V mild-hybrid technology produces 141 kW and 400 Nm. The 420d will also be available in the xDrive guise. 

Next up is the 430i. It comes with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that creates 190 kW and 400 Nm of torque. There is a diesel option at this level, the 430d xDrive which combines a 48 V mild-Hybrid system to a 3.0-litre diesel engine to make 190 kW and 650 Nm. 

Last is the range-topping M440i xDrive that is the first petrol engine to use the 48 V mild-hybrid tech. Using that with a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbocharged engine, we get 275 kW and 500 Nm. The electric motor adds an extra 8 kW on short bursts too. BMW says this 2020 4-Series can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h.

Needless to say, we are excited about the coming of this new BMW and we think that the bold new look to give the 4-Series a unique style was successful. We can expect to see the launch of the BMW 4-Series in October 2020 in the European markets and following that, make its way to our shores in South Africa.
