What the Volkswagen T-Cross is all about

The Volkswagen T-Cross has been around for a while now and has proven to be a very good small SUV. It has even won the South African Leisure Car of the Year. Let look at why it’s such an outstanding car and what it has to offer.

The Volkswagen T-Cross is not everything that it looks like.

From the outside, the Volkswagen T-Cross is a good looking vehicle although it’s looks can be deceiving. It appears to be a sporty off-roader but in reality, it’s a practical 2-wheel drive. I do really like the huge bar running across the taillights and all the bodywork along with the three colours you get to choose. As standard, you get 16-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails and there are a few other design packages to choose from to suit your style.

Strong design and great comfort in the T-Cross seats.

The interior has very cool looking highlights on the steering wheel, centre console and dashboard. It does change depending on the model and colour. Once you do get inside you will get to experience very comfortable seats and nice padded areas for your arms. Unfortunately, the padding stays where your arms would be and all the rest is hard scratchy plastic. Integrated into the dashboard is the 8-inch infotainment screen that can easily connect to your phone. You won’t get Apple CarPlay or Android Auto with the entry-level model which is just disappointing.

In the back, there is a decent amount of room for passengers with USB connection in both the front and back. If your passengers happen to be small children, you can also slide the back seats forward for more boot space. Speaking of which, there is a large boot of 377 litres which extends to 455 litres. It also has space under the false floor for a spare wheel. T-Cross interior

Volkswagen did not give it sport, but it’s comfortable to drive.

There are two petrol engine options, one belonging to the range-topping R-Line. As standard, you would get a 3-cylinder, 85 kW and 200 Nm turbocharged petrol engine. The R-Line, as you would expect, has a more powerful 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 110 kW and 250 Nm. Both options all drive the front wheels through a 7-speed automatic gearbox.

The 3 models of the Volkswagen T-Cross

Comfortline
This is the standard model in South Africa, and it starts at R353 700. It comes with everything we have mentioned before and a few extras like cruise control and front and rear parking sensors.

Highline
The next model up is this, and its price is R385 500. It gets a Climatronic air conditioning system, LED headlamps and driving modes.

R-Line
This is the model with the bigger engine, and it starts at R R403 500. It has a sportier design, 18-inch alloy wheels and digital driver’s display. VW T-Cross sunset

Is it the small SUV for you?

The Volkswagen T-Cross is enjoyable to drive but not the most fun small SUV to zip around windy roads. It is still more practical than other small SUVs and with so much more space for rear passengers than some of its competitors. It’s a must consider if you are in the market for a car like this.
