BMW 5 Series official facelift reveal

BMW has officially revealed the new 5 Series facelift after leaked images earlier this year. Having proven the leaks correct, BMW has revised the 5 Series and given it more than just a facelift, but a boost in technology too.

The BMW 5 Series facelift looks great.

The grille was redone to be bigger but not overwhelmingly so and it goes well with the new slimmer LED headlights. Those feature Selective Beam non-dazzling high-beam with matrix technology and very nice looking daytime running lights.

The style is sportier with an M Sport body kit and new alloy wheel designs that come in 18-inch and 20-inch. There is also an option of 20-inch Air Performance Wheels that are lighter and reduce drag.

The most notable changes inside the cabin is a larger 10-inch infotainment screen, that can be upgraded to 12-inch, and the redesigned switchgear on the centre console. It’s relieving to say that BMW has confirmed that this 5 Series will get both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for the facelift. To top all the interior technology, the 5 Series will now include an upgraded Intelligent Personal Assistant and cloud-based navigation.

Automatic climate control comes standard along with electrically adjustable seats. More new things are the rearranged buttons on the leather steering wheel and updates to the interior trim that look stunning.

All 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder versions of the 5 Series now come with 48V mild hybrid technology that the car uses to run the electronic systems and give an 8 kW boost to the drive. The driver assistance systems have also been updated and improved. The latest version of the optional Integral Active Steering can be added, and it allows tighter turning by steering the rear wheels at speeds under 3 kph. The Lane Departure Warning system got an upgrade and will include a lane-return function through steering assistance. It will use the navigation data it receives through the cloud to anticipate when a lane change will be required and help you do it.

Parking Assistance features also get an update. They now include a reversing assistant which can remember up to 50 metres and then reverse your route for you. Around the car are also 360-degree cameras that help even more with reversing and parking but also include a Drive Recorder function. This lets you store video footage of what happens around your BMW 5 Series so you can help your insurance.

When can we see this new 5 Series?

BMW SA has said the facelift of the BMW 5 Series will arrive in the final quarter of the year. There will be 4 model ranges, 520d, 530i, M550i xDrive, M5 Competition, and then a fifth limited edition M Sport Edition that will only have 1000 units made. A very exciting facelift for the BMW 5 Series that’s more than just design.
