GM new EV platform revealed
GM has just revealed the skeleton of their new EV platform and it looks like a giant electric off-road skateboard. “Our electric future is now,” says GM to their audience as they reveal what we can expect in many EV’s to come.
In order to create EV’s quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively, GM developed this platform to work on every one of their brands and on every type of car. They call it a “multi-brand, multi-segmented EV strategy,” and say that it will be less complex and flexible.
They managed this by making a modular battery system where their new Ultium batteries can be stacked along the frame. Depending on the car’s needs, the batteries can be stacked flat for space or stacked upright for more energy.
These batteries range from 50 to 200 kWh and offer up to 640 km. When it comes to performance cars, going to 100 km/h from standstill could be as low as 3 seconds. It’s quite impressive since it is the same system that will be for a little city cruiser.
GM says that we can expect to see an EV using this platform in late 2020. All of this information is GM’s future predictions and are subject to change going forward.
Will this be enough for GM to compete against Tesla? Probably not and GM did not share how they intend to create budget electric EV’s either. But at least GM aren’t falling too far behind now.
