Castrol oils in a World Rally Car

The World Rally Championship (WRC) is the ultimate challenge that demands man and machine work in sync to battle the elements: icy roads at minus 30?c in Sweden, thin air at 2800 metres above sea level in a sweltering Mexico, loose gravel and clay in dusty Australia. That is why the M-Sport World Rally Team turns to Castrol oils in the WRC – to ensure the engine does its job, in whatever weather is thrown at it, and converts the 300+ horsepower into maximum performance on all surfaces. The oils of choice: Castrol EDGE Titanium FST™ engine oil and Castrol SYNTRANS for the gearbox.

However, the two Ford Fiesta RS WRC cars with their crews of Elfyn Evans/Daniel Barritt (GBR/GBR) and Ott Tänak/Raigo Mõlder (EST/EST) are not the only cars to be given perfect lubrication “powered by Castrol”. Every Ford production car is given the same treatment before it leaves the factory, in order to ensure it masters the challenges it will face in everyday driving. “A World Rally Car such as our Fiesta RS WRC 1.6 litre Ecoboost and a regular Ford Fiesta that you can buy at any Ford dealership are in many ways not that different from each other,” says M-Sport Team Principal Malcolm Wilson (GBR). In both cases, maximum endurance is key. Evans and Tänak change gear well over 2,000 times in their Fiesta RS WRC over the course of the special stages that make up a round of the World Rally Championship. By comparison: that is four times more gear changes than an everyday Fiesta driver would make on average over 4,000 kilometres on motorways, country roads and in city traffic.

“Of course, our World Rally Car features much more engine power than the average Fiesta, a totally different gearbox and transmission that were designed for rally racing, a roll cage – and also much less comfort. But both cars share the same genes as the Fiesta RS WRC is based on the standard production Fiesta,” says Wilson with regard to the joint quest for performance – both in high-tech rally cars as well as in normal road cars.

“This means that our requirements when it comes to the Castrol lubricants that we use in our World Rally Car are actually not that different from what the average consumer wants for their car: maximum durability, minimal carbon emissions and low fuel consumption – and this is exactly what Castrol’s superior lubricants have to offer.” So, whether in extreme heat or cold, thin or dusty air – Castrol oils guarantee perfect lubrication of the engine along with optimal power, low friction loss, low consumption, and low CO2 emissions in the World Rally Championship and in everyday traffic.
