Volkswagen’s ID.4 has been a very successful crossover EV, and now it’s getting the GTX badge. Having recently achieved the 2021 World Car of the Year and impressive sales numbers, it makes sense to give the vehicle a sporty treatment. This one comes packed with more power and slight design updates.
Minor updates to the design.
While the shape is unchanged, the lower body cladding of the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX gets body colour paint while the roof rails are finished in black. At the rear, there is a new LED pattern in the taillights. As standard, the ID.4 GTX will get 20-inch wheels but larger 21-inch wheels will be available.
The interior also gets a minor touch up. This includes more red trim and a new layout for the instrument cluster. GTX badging completes the cabin updates.
Dual motors mean more power for Volkswagen’s ID.4 GTX.
It’s not the design updates that you would want to be buying this new model, it’s the motor. Or motors in this case. Volkswagen equipped the sportier model with a second motor, so now both axles are powered. To conserve energy, the ID.4 GTX will favour the rear wheels until higher traction or more power is needed.
These motors are attached to a 77 kWh battery to make 220 kW. This will set the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h to around 6.2 seconds. The top speed is still electronically limited to 180 km/h.
With the extra motor, the range does take a knock. Now 40 km less than the previous flagship model, you can drive up to a predicted 480 km. As for charging, 300 of those kilometres can be gotten back in just 30 minutes from a 125 kW fast charger.
