Electric cars have been making a lot of ground in terms of infrastructure and not much has been going on for EV motorcycle charging. Well, that may change now that Gogoro and Hero MotoCorp have teamed up to create a solution.
The partnership will be bringing Gogoro’s battery-swapping network and electric scooters to India. Which is the biggest two-wheel market. While it’s just scooters, for now, it could mean that there will be more to come.
Ev motorcycle charging – more like battery-swapping.
Right now, Gogoto already has its battery-swapping network running in Taiwan where it allows electric scooter drivers to simply swap batteries when they run low. This is the quickest way of charging any vehicle and could be the future of EV motorcycles.
Hero MotoCorp is one of the world’s biggest motorbike makers which means this partnership may find EV motorcycles using the same system in India.
“Our strategic partnership with Gogoro is in line with our vision – ‘Be the Future of Mobility’ which we are bringing alive through our mission to ‘Create, Collaborate & Inspire’. Today marks another major milestone in our journey, as we bring Hero’s leadership in two-wheelers, our global scale and innovation powerhouse, with the leadership of Gogoro in the swapping business model, as they have demonstrated over the years in Taiwan and the rest of the world.” – Dr Pawan Munjal, Chairman and CEO, Hero MotoCorp
In a similar vein, the big Japanese motorcycle companies, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki, have also joined to develop swappable batteries. This will allow for a similar system to work across all brands.
As for our local market, we imagine that it will take a long time before we see any advancements like this. South Africa is already taking a long time to get the infrastructure of electric cars and we imagine that it’s only well after that that we will see electric motorbikes.
