Canoo is an electric automotive startup that has just revealed a pickup built for America. Based in California, it no surprise that that’s who they market it for. This interesting EV bakkie is one of the most utility-focused EVs on track for production.
“We are so passionate about building vehicles that can change people’s lives. Our pickup truck is as strong as the toughest trucks out there and is designed to be exponentially more productive.” – Tony Aquila, Executive Chairman, Canoo
Canoo turned their MVP into a pickup.
This isn’t the startups first rodeo and the pickup is being based on the past success Canoo has had. Before, the company made an MPV that looked a lot like a rounded box on wheels. It doesn’t sound like much, but it works for both style and interior space. The Canoo pickup will be that EV exactly but with a bakkie’s rear.
There is a huge focus on utility and modularity. In their words, it’s “to help customers do more with their vehicles.” This plan has given the pickup fold-out tables, secret storage compartments and several places to charge and power other tools.
Starting with the bed, there is a pull-out extension that will increase the 1.8-metre long space to a total of 2.4-metres long. If the storage space is full, there are steps that can be pullout out from the side to easily access the top of the load or grab items at the bottom.
Organisation can also be made easier with Canoo’s space divider. Need to see what you’re doing in the dark? The third taillight, positioned above the bed, can function as an overhead light.
What if the bed is full and you don’t have a table to work on? Canoo made a solution for those rare situations too. Where the grill would normally go of a car, there’s a fold-out table with a storage compartment behind it. This space is perfect for keeping the tools you would want to use and even charge them.
If the storage space still wasn’t enough, buyers can opt for a roof rack that can be easily accessed by using that step we mentioned earlier. It can also get you into your camper shell that Canoo has designed to fit many different varieties.
“This truck works for you. We made accessories for people who use trucks – on the job, weekends, adventure. You name it, we did it because it’s your platform and she’s bad to the bone.” – Tony Aquila
Canoo promises to be just as tough as the rest.
Canoo is using the same electric platform it uses on all of its vehicles. On the pickup specifically, there will be a dual-motor configuration that can reach 447 kW and 745 Nm.
According to Canoo, there will be more than 320 km of range available in this pickup. The range will likely be considerably less if you were to pack it up to its maximum payload of 816 kg.
