Maruti Suzuki will officially begin producing the Jimny in India with a 5-door variant. Yes, even the smallest of small off-road SUVs are getting the large treatment. Being different isn’t new for the Jimny as there have been country-specific versions before for New Zealand and the UK.
The reports suggest that the 5-door Jimny has its sights set on 2021 for launch in India. Unfortunately, there have been no teaser images, but apart from a longer wheelbase, it is expected that the Jimny will remain the same both visually and mechanically.
This would put up a strong competition for the new generation Mahindra Thar, an already popular off-road capable SUV within India. As for South Africa, it’s safe to assume that the 5-door Jimny might stay in India.
In preparation for the 5-door, here are two other unique Suzuki Jimny variants.
With a carrying capacity of 750 kg, this pick-up Jimny is only produced in New Zealand. This variant does only come with the lower-spec version of the Jimny, so it is purely a working car.
With the rear seats completely removed for increased load space, this Jimny produced for the UK was created for light commercial use. It gets up to 863 litres in the back with cargo partitions to keep what’s back there from rolling around.
Which Suzuki Jimny variant do you like the most and would you ever consider using it for either work or leisure?
