Gordon Murray’s GMA reveals their new T.50 supercar

A new supercar built by Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) has been revealed and it’s a sight to behold. Designed by the South African-born Professor Gordon Murray, it’s somewhat of the successor to the McLaren F1. With just 100 road units planned, this GMA T.50 is incredibly exciting.

The GMA T.50 is simple, clean and beautiful.

Not looking at the crazy features the GMA T.50 has, the design is kept simple, clean and beautiful. The wings, vents and ducts are all toned down to be exactly what they need to be but not shoved into your face. They being said, the remotely-released dihedral doors certainly do stand out when open.

A lot of the simplicity changes when viewing the T.50 from the rear. The massive fan that almost looks like a jet engine will definitely stand out wherever this supercar is driven.

High-grade carbon fibre was what the body and chassis are constructed from. While every nut, bolt and washer are all made from titanium. Lightweight was a big accomplishment with this GMA T.50 as it only weighs in at 986 kg!

GMA claims their T.50 has the “most advanced and effective aerodynamics ever seen on a road car”. Aided by the 400 mm rear-mounted ground-effect fan that we mentioned earlier. It’s driven by a lightweight 48 V motor to rapidly accelerate air passing under the car, forcing it to go through active boundary-layer control ducts that form part of the rear diffuser.

Made to be a practical driving supercar?

“I’ve designed this car to be used every day, with almost 300 litres of luggage and storage space, a 10-speaker 700W Arcam audio system and an Apple CarPlay/Android Auto-compatible infotainment system. From its exceptional visibility and a compact footprint to ease of ingress and egress, the T.50 rewrites the supercar rule book for usability.” – Gordon Murray

This supercar was built for the road as much as the track and we love the central driving position. Taking up to 2 passengers, their seats flank the driver’s although we don’t know how comfortable it would be there. Kept as simple on the interior as the exterior, there are no touchscreens or stalk controls. Instead, everything is managed from the floating centre console which features the aluminium gear stick, drive mode selector, infotainment controls and the start/stop button.

Gordon Murray made things even more practical with a luggage space of 288 litres. A very useful amount when talking supercars.

Reaching 12,100 rpm, the T.50 has a tornado for a heart.

GMA claim that this T.50 is the highest-revving naturally aspirated road car engine ever. Reaching up to 12,100 rpm, we don’t doubt it. At its core, the T.50 has a 3.9-litre V12 Cosworth engine capable of reaching 488 kW and 467 Nm of torque all mated to a 6-speed Xtrac manual gearbox.

Obviously, we would love to see track times. Unfortunately, GMA has not revealed any yet, but we imagine there will be more information closer to the launch.

Downforce is generated by the active rear spoiler or a large venturi beneath the body that channels airflow into the fan. The driver will have access to 4 aero-modes while there are another 2 that are automatic. This allows the GMA T.50 to increase downforce by 50% and reduce drag by 12.5%.

As of right now, the GMA T.50 is scheduled to go into production in the UK in January of 2022 and will start at £2,36 million. We hope that between now and then we will get to see some driving footage and track times.
