It’s a new Porsche 911 and it’s called the Taycan. While this EV has been made to be like a 911, it still comes into its own. While around as fast and a whole lot more expensive than a Tesla, the amount of quality could put a Model S to shame.
An electric Porsche 911 that becomes its own Taycan.
The front of the car stays true to its 911 roots, however, with new headlights. They are more oval in shape and with LEDs look fantastic. The standard model called the 4S has a lot of black trim underneath the part of the body, almost like it was casting a shadow over itself which, a bit unlike a Suzuki S-Presso, looks great.
From the outside, apart from the door handles, a lot of the features are touch-sensitive. This includes the boot door and charge cap which when you touch, open by themselves. That charge cap even tucks itself inside the car so it can’t get damaged.
More technology than you would have guessed.
If you have been in a 911, imagine that but with more technology. If you have not been in a 911, imagine the future, dial it back a bit and then imagine being in a 911. To show you why I am making you imagine these things, the Porsche Taycan has 4 monitors standard and a 5th optional. Starting at the driver’s seat, there’s a digital driver’s display. In the centre console there is the regular touch screen infotainment system and underneath that, a touch screen for climate control. Follow the centre console to the back seats and there’s another touch screen for the climate control in the back. Want more touch screens? There’s an optional screen for your front passenger too. You can configure all these screens as well to do what you want them too. Isn’t that just wild?
The rest of the interior is surrounded by very high-quality material and the sporty seats hold you in place comfortably. They are designed to make you feel like you are in a 911 and they do that very well. The only thing that is different is that because of the battery, you are seated higher up. That goes for the rear seats too which unfortunately for taller friends, the great space in the back is stunted by the headroom it offers. There is also a lot of connectivity with USB ports and an optional glass roof.
Fitting things into this Taycan is not the worst for an electric sports car, however, it’s still very little. The boot gives 366-litres. There is a front boot which could maybe fit 1 small backpack.
So what is the Taycan made out of?
Porsche say there will be a more powerful version later on for the Taycan, but for now, here is the entry-level 4S statistics.
The 4S has a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery and has a range of 407 km. This powerful motor gives 435 hp that increases to 530 hp on launch control. There will be a Performance Battery Plus upgrade that increases all those stats too.
The next models up are the Turbo and Turbo S who’s motor statistics change depending on where you are reading. The Turbo S has been said to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.4 seconds which is just as quick as the Tesla Model S.
All four wheels are driven by two motors through a unique two-speed transmission and it all sits on an air suspension which makes the ride incredibly smooth. Because this is an electric car, it has no engine noise but that doesn’t stop outside noises from interfering. Porsche has done a lot of sound insulation for this and the worse sounds you will probably hear is the suspension on a rough road, so almost nothing.
If you are a Porsche fan or not, this car is cool.
Being a fan of both Porsche and EVs, this car really excites me. We can’t expect to see it in South Africa any time soon and even then, expect the price of the Taycan to be incredibly high. So if you have the money and want a performance EV that will make you feel above Tesla, this car is definitely an option.
