With the lockdown set to end on the 16th of April 2020, it is very important that you take measures to maintain your car. Many vehicles may be standing still in garages or outside and you cannot assume that it will be up and running after this much inactivity.
“Any vehicle that is left unused for a period of time may develop issues that require intervention to get running normally again.” – AA
We can avoid these issues by taking steps to maintain and protect our vehicles during the lockdown. The AA has released tips just how we can do that.
5 tips for maintaining your car during the lockdown.
Keep it clean: Dirt can cause damage. This is the perfect time to do a full inside and outside clean of your vehicle.
Park undercover: If possible, park indoors under a roof. If you are unable to do that, use a car cover.
Cover intakes and outlets: Don’t let insects and other creatures get inside your car. Just remember to remove them.
Disconnect the battery: Always disconnect the negative terminal first and make sure you are wearing appropriate safety gear. Using petroleum jelly on the disconnected terminals will help prevent rust.
Cover wiper blades: You can put a piece of plastic between them and the windshield. This will prevent sticking and save the wipers from damage.
Getting back on the road.
“Do not assume that an unused vehicle is going to start first time weeks after it was last used if it is not properly cared for during the lockdown.” – AA
If you intend to get your vehicle started on your commute on the 17th of April, then test it on the 13th. This will give you enough time to address any issues that may occur.
We trust you are staying safe during the lockdown and that you maintain your car.
