With over 149 500 units sold since its marketing introduction in March 2010, Volkswagen Polo Vivo has been the best-selling passenger model in South Africa in the past four years. Polo Vivo is the only locally built model in the competitive A0 segment
Polo Vivo has been a dominant brand in this entry-level hatch segment in spite of the new models being launched on regular basis. Polo Vivo’s key product attributes such as affordability, German build quality, safety, space and comfort have a set an unparalleled benchmark in the segment. These attributes continue to re-affirm Polo Vivo’s unique offering of “affordable and accessible mobility” to the South African customers.
Polo Vivo offers excellent value for money without compromising on core product essentials that customers expect from Volkswagen. In a Polo Vivo, customers are getting an A class car for the price of an A0 car, a difficult proposition to ignore in this heavily contested segment of the market.
Polo Vivo has the class-leading residual value in its segment in the used car market. The cost of ownership over a 3-year cycle makes Polo Vivo one of the cheapest cars to own in the South Africa market.
Nearly 70% of Polo Vivo parts are sourced from local suppliers. The localisation of parts resulted in the creation of a number of jobs and the establishment of a Supplier Park in Uitenhage.
The ‘Proudly South Africaness’ of the Polo Vivo has encouraged and attracted government fleet buyers and rental companies to list it as their car of choice.
Polo Vivo is offered in two body versions, namely hatch and sedan.
New equipment lines
The new Polo Vivo model range will be launched with four new equipment lines, Conceptline, Blueline, Trendline and Comfortline. The hatch body version will also be available in a sporty GT and rugged Maxx derivatives.
Enhanced features
Volkswagen has given the new Polo Vivo fresh and exciting look with the addition of new headlight design and grille with chrome inserts. The redesigned front end with the VW badge in the centre is strikingly noticeable when one sees the new Polo Vivo for the first time. In Trendline and Comfortline derivatives, the lower grille also gets chrome inserts that add youthful, modern character to the new car.
Exterior mirrors and door handles of the Trendline, Comfortline and GT derivatives are offered in body colour.
The Conceptline, Trendline and Comfortline have new interior trims which add exciting ambience and feel into cabin of the new Polo Vivo. A new gear knob with leatherette gearshift has been introduced. Trendline, Comfortline, GT and Maxx derivatives now have a height adjustable driver seat. The new instrument cluster wi
th red and white illumination adds class to the cabin.
For in-car entertainment, new Polo Vivo customers have an option of CD/radio with MP3 capability/Bluetooth/USB with 4-speakers (standard on Trendline but optional on Conceptline and Blueline). Comfortline, GT and Maxx derivatives get two extra speakers for sound enhancement.
Active and passive standard safety features have been enhanced in the new Polo. ABS, alarm and remote central locking are now standard features across the range. Front foglights are a standard feature in Comfortline, GT and Maxx derivatives.
Boot space for all seasons
Volkswagen Polo Vivo has a generous and practical boot space when it comes to transporting luggage. For the hatch body version, the boot has luggage volume of 270 liters and with folded rear bench seat it increases to 635 liters. Meanwhile, Polo Vivo Sedan boasts of 432 liters of luggage compartment which increases to a voluminous 737 liters with folded seats.
High torsional stiffness improves comfort and safety
Body quality is one of the key qualities of Volkswagen products. The high quality standard of the body is obvious to even untrained eyes, for example, when you look at the small gap measurements. This is a clear sign that the Polo Vivo has a very high torsional stiffness.
This not only prevents undesired noise inside the body structure, but also makes a decisive contribution to the high level of occupant safety. The safety structure of the body provides optimum protection in accidents. The body is also well protected against corrosion. Polo Vivo comes standard with a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty.
Modern chassis design enhances safety
The chassis design is based on both modern and proven principles that make the Polo Vivo one of the safest car in the A0 entry level segment. The suspension has been developed using the McPherson strut. The lower wishbones ensure the best possible directional stability.
The concept using a subframe optimises the handling and the Polo Vivo’s crash safety as well as also reducing the tyre noise. Volkswagen has opted for a semi-independent axle for the rear utilising the torsion beam and trailing arm configuration. This makes a decisive contribution to the neutral driving performance. The separate configuration of springs and dampers is advantageous for the boot as it allows a wider cargo space.
The Polo Vivo features the tried and tested electro/hydraulic power steering, which has been further optimised for comfort driving. This system is electrically powered and controlled independently of the engine speed according to needs. Depending on the car speed and the car weight, the hydraulic system is supplied with higher or lower pressure. This system creates advantages above all in fuel consumption. Controlling the powering steering pump according to the road speed means less energy is required than conventional power steering pumps.
Modern engines for driving enjoyment and fuel efficiency
The new Polo Vivo model range is offered with two four-cylinder petrol engines, 1.4 and 1.6 liters. The power output of these engines range from 55 kW to 77 kW. Both engines are available with 5-speed manual transmissions as standard. An optional tiptronic transmission is available with 63 kW 1.4 engine.
1.4 delivering 55 kW – Conceptline
The entry engine in the Polo Vivo model range is the 1.4-liter with the 55 kW power output available 5000rpm. This engine has ample power and torque for dynamic and everyday driving. From 2200rpm, the engine supplies 90 percent of its maximum torque that peaks at 132 Nm. In addition to its lively performance, the 1.4-liter engine has impressive fuel consumption of 6.2 liters per 100 kilometres.
1.4 delivering 55 kW – Blueline
Thanks to low resistance tryes and lowered suspension, Blueline is most fuel efficient Polo Vivo in the range. Blueline has 1.4 55 kW engine with 132 Nm of torque available at 3600rpm. Its average fuel consumption is a miserly 5.8 l/100km.
1.4 delivering 63 kW – Trendline
The engine of choice for the Trendline derivatives is the 63 kW 1.4-liter engine. This engine is offered with a standard 5-speed transmission or with an optional automatic (Tiptronic) transmission. With 132Nm of torque at 3600 (3800 for Tiptronic) rpm, this engine delivers lively performance. It only takes 12.2 (17.5 for Tiptronic) seconds to reach 100km/h and has top speed of 177(174 for Tiptronic) km per hour. On average, it has combined fuel consumption of 6.2 (6.9 for Tiptronic) liters for every 100 kilometres.
1.6 delivering 77 kW – Comfortline, GT and Maxx
With a top speed of 187 km/h, the 1.6 liter 77 kW engine offers exciting performance. The sprint from 0-100 km/h is achieved in 10.6 seconds. The 155 Nm torque is available at 3500rpm. The performance has not compromised fuel consumption. The 77 kW engine has a respectable claimed fuel consumption of 6.6 liters per 100 kilometres.
