Time for a Test Drive

Taking the car for a short test drive can tell you a lot about its performance and its handling. Is the car reluctant to start? Watch carefully for excessive and colored exhaust smoke on start up. Check lights are fully functional and listen for any engine rattles.

  • Let the engine warm up fully (at least 15 minutes) Is the temperature gauge half way between hot and cold?
  • Are there any belt screeches, when you pull away?
  • Does the car pull to one side on a straight road or when braking?
  • When you brake sharply from speed does the car respond quickly?
  • Does the handbrake work when applied on a hill?
  • Are there any strange rattles or squeaks?

Lastly

Check the history of the car, check for accidents via the traffic department.
Consider getting a trained mechanic or a professional organization to perform a full inspection of the vehicle, especially if considering a private sale. Make sure you obtain a copy of their report.
