Volkswagen Jetta get TSI and common rail TDI engines
The Volkswagen Jetta model range has been rejuvenated with the introduction of the multiple-award winning 1.4 TSI and the common rail TDI engines. The rejuvenation aims to position Jetta’s engines in line with the Golf 6.
Further changes to the Jetta include new exterior colours, interior trim, alloy wheels and standard multi-function steering wheels on all models except in the 1.6 Trendline.
Jetta is now assembled at the Volkswagen Puebla plant in Mexico after the Volkswagen of South Africa manufacturing plant in Uitenhage adopted a 2-platform strategy to produce only the new Polo and Polo Vivo.
Jetta’s model range has also been revised to include Trendline, Comfortline and Highline.
The entry level Trendline offers standard features such as electric windows (front and rear), dual electric side view mirrors, semi-automatic Climatic airconditioning system, six airbags which includes curtain (front and rear), side (front) airbags and Servotronic power steering.
True to its name, the Comfortline offers a range of comfort orientated features. Further to the Trendline standard features, Comfortline includes adjustable lumbar support, adjustable and extendable front armrest, automatic anti-dazzle interior mirror, cruise control and rain sensor.
The Highline carries special traits in its name. In addition to the Comfortline standard features, Highline has sport seats, 3-spoke leather sport steering wheel, sport suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels. The top of the range Highline model is offered with the 147kW TSI engine and has features such as Electronic Stability Programme with Brake Assist and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), 2-Zone and leather seats
Overview of the engines
The engine line up for the Jetta covers the 75kW to 147kW power output. There are four advanced petrol engines and two common rail turbo diesel engines. All engines are compliant with Euro 5 emission standards except the 75kW engine.
Petrol
1.6 with 75 kW: The quiet running engine generates maximum output of 75 kW at 5,600 rpm and achieves torque of 148 Newton meters at 3,800 rpm. With a top speed of 188 km/h it gives Jetta plenty of agile driving performance. It can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 11.3 seconds. Average fuel consumption is held down to just 7.1 liters per 100 kilometers. The 1.6 Jetta is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission.1.4 TSI with 90 kW: Maximum power with minimum fuel consumption. This characteristic has made Volkswagen TSI engine technology world class benchmark and unrivalled in its engine segment. TSI is synonymous with economical and sporty engines. The maximum torque of 200 Nm is available at speeds of 1,500 rpm. It boasts of a top speed of 200km/h. A sprint of 0-100km/h is achieved in 9.5 seconds. It has miserly average fuel consumption of 6.2 liters per 100 kilometers. A six-speed manual transmission is standard in the 1.4 TSI. The 7-speed double clutch system (DSG) is also available as an option.
1.4 TSI with 118 kW: With the most powerful 1.4 TSI engine, Volkswagen offers a four cylinder that is both turbo- and supercharged. It has a power of 118 kW at 5,800 rpm. Its maximum torque of 240 Newton-meter is available at a low 1,500 rpm. On open road, it can reach a top speed of 220km/h and 0-100 km/h is achieved in 8 seconds. Like the 90 kW TSI, this engine is also exceptionally fuel-efficient. The 118 kW TSI achieves a top value in fuel savings at 6.3 liters.
2.0 TSI with 147 kW: Powered by the 2.0 TSI engine, Jetta turns out to be a veritable sports sedan. The solid front-drive vehicle breaks out of the starting blocks and reaches the 100 km/h mark is just 7.5 seconds and achieves top speed of 235 km/h on the freeway – without a surcharge for urgent delivery. The top model has average fuel consumption of just 8.0 liters per 100 kilometers. The Jetta 2.0 TSI is offered with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Diesel Engines
1.6 TDI with 77 kW: The 1.6 TDI engine achieves its power output of 77 kW at 4400 rpm. Its torque of 250 Nm is available at 1,500-2,500 rpm. It is available with an option of a 5-speed manual or 7-speed DSG transmission. With a top speed of 189 km/h, the 1.6 TDI sprints from 0-100 km/h in 11.3 seconds. The average fuel consumption is a respectable 5.2 liters per 100 km for the manual and 5.6 liters per 100 km for the DSG.
2.0 TDI with 103 kW: The extremely economical Jetta 2.0 TDI provides inspiration with impressive reserves of power under any circumstances. The common rail direct injection turbo diesel with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) produces 103 kW at 4,000 rpm. Its torque curve achieves at peak of 1,750 to 2,500 rpm an impressive maximum of 320 Newton meters. The Jetta 2.0 TDI achieves a top speed of 209 km/h and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h is just 9.3 seconds. In contrast, the average fuel consumption lies at only 4.9 liters over a distance per 100 kilometers. As standard equipment manual six-gear transmission relays engine performance to the front wheels.
The Volkswagen Jetta range comes standard with a 5 year/60 000km AutoMotion Plan, 3 year/120 000km warranty and a 12 year anti-corrosion warranty. Service Interval is 15 000km.
